How We Repair a Ceiling

1. Find and confirm the cause. If water is involved, the leak needs to be fixed and the area dry before we patch.
2. Remove the damaged drywall and install new board where needed.
3. Tape and finish the repair in multiple coats so it's flat and invisible.
4. Match the texture. Ceilings can be brush, spray, roll or smooth finish — we look at what you have and use the tools to match it. See texture matching.
5. Prime and paint with a custom color match, or repaint the whole ceiling when that gives the best result.

A typical ceiling patch takes about four to five hours, sometimes longer depending on the damage. Repairs are usually painted the next day once everything has fully dried; small repairs can sometimes be finished the same day. Larger water or flood damage can take several weeks.

Ceiling Repair FAQ

Can you just paint over a water stain?

If the drywall is still solid and dry, a stain-blocking primer and paint can work. If it's soft, sagging or crumbling, the damaged section needs to be replaced. We'll tell you which one you need.

Will the repaired spot match the rest of my ceiling?

That's the whole point of how we work. We match texture by hand and color-match the paint, or repaint the full ceiling if the old paint has yellowed or faded.

How much does ceiling repair cost?
